Role of Technology in Genomics

by

The impact of the technology is not only for the computers and electronic gadgets. Technology has impact on medical field too. There are many examples that can explain the impact of technology in medical field. One of such examples is DNA chip. It is also termed as DNA microarray. This technology is useful for the people undergoing researches in molecular biology field. This technology is helpful in studying the DNA and genomics. DNA chips consist of RNA and DNA nucleotides of short sequences. They are called as Oligonucleotides. They have less than twenty base pairs.

In 1987, the microarrays were introduced. Many manufacturing methods are employed for making DNA chips. The number of probes, need and cost decide the method of manufacturing the DNA chips. The DNA chips are used in the process of gene expression profiling and in the process of tiling array. The arrays are spatially arranged in the DNA chips. The solid surfaces are used by the DNA by attaching themselves to the solid surfaces. These firmly fixed DNA segments are called probes. They are firmly fixed to the surface. Using DNA chips we can detect the DNA and RNA. Genetic tests are done using the arrays of DNA found in this chip. Thus DNA chip is a good example for technological improvement in medical field.
